Volunteer Stories

As a volunteer from Projects Abroad, working at SIRC has been a fantastic experience for me and although I only had a month's placement I feel that I helped make a difference to the patients - both those assigned to me for rehab sessions, and those I assisted during group activities. The staff have been amazingly kind to me and were keen to help with any difficulties such as translation and communication problems.Lots of memories will stay with me of my placement here, such as Friday afternoon's group activity sessions - my favourites being wheelchair obstacle races, karaoke, and blind-fold wheelchair skill sessions. It is very much a big family setting and I think the benefit of being referred here from other hospitals will be beneficial to the patient when eventually going home as they will have had positive and productive rehabilitation which should make their disability less of a negative aspect for the future.

I worked as a Physiotherapist in the SIRC Kathmandu from the 30.11.07 to the 12.04.08. During this time I enjoyed working with wonderful people: My patients and my team colleagues. Both made the time special with their enthusiasm and never ending will to push forward. To recognize this and spend time together was an inspiration and the greatest experience which I will never forget. With patients' backgrounds that are new and, from a western perspective, often difficult to handle it is necessary to step back and lay down the glasses that conceal what lies beneath the surface. I would like to know about future plans and what the volunteers at the SIRC Kathmandu are doing: If you are interested to know more about your future work in the Physiotherapy Department or if you have any questions, I will be glad to share my experiences further.
