Volunteer Stories

I am a third year physiotherapy student in Amsterdam. I decided to spend three months
helping SIRC to give me the chance to appreciate the practicalities and working methods
in a culture that is different to that in Europe. After a short initiation phase, I was
introduced to my own patients to treat them independently. Should I need it, there is
always substantial back-up from the SIRC physiotherapy staff. This way of working has
created a lively atmosphere and I have the impression that I can really help here.
On the other hand, the work is enriching for me. I learn much from the interdisciplinary
staff as well as from the patients. Although language is often a barrier, it is challenging
to get a base of understanding with the help of my slowly expanding knowledge of Nepali.
After one month at SIRC, I already feel this is a great, fulfilling experience. If you
can come with an open mind and open heart, I am sure you will enjoy working here as a volunteer.

I decided a few years ago that I would like to spend some of my time helping those less privileged than myself, and so joined up with the British Consultancy Charitable Trust, an organization which provides consultancy to overseas charitable projects. I started with an assignment in India, and for the last two years I have been involved with SIRC in Nepal. My role has been to advise on fund raising, building a strategy, developing skills within SIRC and writing proposals with the SIRC board. I am delighted that SIRC has found a local fundraiser. In my current 2-month assignment I look forward to training Kumudini to work with SIRC board to achieve the challenging financial targets. Over the past year, I have worked with Rotary Clubs of Leeds and Kastamadap, Kahmandu for financial assistance which has resulted in a 10,000$ grant for medical equipment. I shall maintain my link with SIRC by working in the UK to assist with additional fund raising.

I have worked in Canada, UK, Ghana and Kenya with children and adults of all ages in various health settings. I heard about volunteering opportunities at SIRC from a colleague. In the first three weeks I am working with staff that are friendly, supportive and demonstrate compassion in their care for the patients. As a volunteer, I feel welcomed and supported by the SIRC staff as I settle into becoming part of the team.Having more medical and therapeutic equipment and supplies would definitely enhance the range and quality of care/therapy that can be provided. For example, having treatment beds that can be raised up or down would open up more treatment options as well as protect the backs of caretakers/staff when lifting patients.
Volunteering at SIRC is an opportunity for me to exchange knowledge with staff and gain skills for the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury that I would otherwise not be able to do in more developed settings.
