Vocational training is another component of the rehabilitation program at SIRC. After enduring a spinal cord injury, most patients are unable resume the work they did prior to their injuries (often farming or working as a laborer). Losing the ability to continue work can be financially devastating to both the patients and their families. Therefore, the objective of the vocational training department is to ensure that the patients are able to learn practical income-generating skills. Currently, the Centre offers classes on candle-making, bag-making, sewing, chalk-making, and basket weaving. The products created by the patients through the vocational training program are sold at local fairs and the income generated goes to support patients who cannot afford their rehabilitation treatment.
Several of our patients have employed the vocational skills learnt at SIRC and are now earning a living with their new skills. (See patient stories)
