The Nursing Department is an integral part of the rehabilitation program at SIRC providing 24-hour patient care. The department is supported by a medical doctor, nurses, certified medical assistants (CMAs), and ward assistants. The nursing care focuses on attending to patients' medical needs as well as educating the patients and their caregivers about relevant health issues.
Medical CareThe Nursing Department handles all of the patient's medical concerns and provides symptomatic treatment. However due to the nature of spinal injuries, the department's main focus is on assisting patients with bladder and bowel management, skin management (especially treatment and prevention of pressure sores), as well as deep vein thrombosis and autonomic dysreflexia.
Health Education ClassesTo complement the medical care provided and to ensure the overall recovery of the patients, the Nursing Department conducts health education classes once every week. These classes cover a wide range of topics including:
- -general information about SCI
- -stress management techniques

- -how to safely transfer the patient to and from the wheelchair
- -eating a well-balanced diet
- -how to avoid and minimize the occurrence of pressure sores
- -proper hygiene and self care
- -management of bowel and bladder
