Nursing

In addition to providing the patients with 24 hours nursing care the Nursing Department also oversees educating the patients on bowel, bladder, and skin management. In concordance the Department attended to patients with pressure sores and provided necessary information regarding dealing with bowel and bladder issues. Of the 115 patients this past fiscal year, 65 had learned and started using the CIC/CISC, 15 used Foley’s catheters, and 34 were able to independently void. The Nursing Department is an integral part of the rehabilitation program at SIRC providing 24-hour patient care. The department is supported by a medical doctor, nurses, certified medical assistants (CMAs), and ward assistants. The nursing care focuses on attending to patients' medical needs as well as educating the patients and their caregivers about relevant health issues.

A full time medical doctor is availible at the Spinal Center in order to provide the quality care that the patients need. The Nursing Department, running under the supervision of the medical doctor, handles all of the patient's medical concerns and provides symptomatic treatment. However due to the nature of spinal injuries, the department's main focus is on assisting patients with bladder and bowel management, skin management (especially treatment and prevention of pressure sores), as well as deep vein thrombosis and autonomic dysreflexia.
To complement the medical care provided and to ensure the overall recovery of the patients, the Nursing Department conducts health education classes once every week. These classes cover a wide range of topics including:
- General information about SCI
- Stress management techniques
- How to sit on the wheelchair and maintain a good posture
- How to safely transfer the patient to and from the wheelchair
- Eating a well-balanced diet
- How to avoid and minimize the occurrence of pressure sores
- Proper hygiene and self care
- Management of bowel and bladder
Furthermore, the Nursing Department also conducts additional classes according to the needs of patients.
