39-year-old Mandira Poudel lives in Kavre with her husband, son and daughter. As a housewife and a former Social Worker, she used to keep herself active most of the time. On a cold December night, when the entire neighborhood was fast asleep, the Poudel family faced such an accident, which left them shattered for months.Mandira still cannot recall what exactly happened to her that night; however, her family members claim that she fell from her bed and tumbled down the stairs during sleep.
Roshan Adhikari is a 21-year-old university student pursuing a career on pharmacy and health sciences in Itahari, Sunsari. Roshan, naturally a bright student was keen on learning and serving his community, which gave his family every reason to be proud. On the 19th of December 2012 Roshan sustained spinal cord injury from an unfortunate jeep accident.Within hours following the accident, Roshan was rushed to a nearby primary healthcare centre from which he was sent to Neurological Hospital in Kathmandu. At Neuro Hospital, Roshan received surgical management for his cervical (C6) fracture, which straightened his back, but left his body in a paralyzed state.
27-year-old Yogendra Khadka lives with his family in the Western hilly region of Nepal. A former field worker of a GIZ agricultural project, Khadka was required to travel for field work. While travelling to Surkhet by bus through narrow gravel roads, Khadka’s bus along with other passengers faced a fatal accident. Khadka never thought what was to happen that day, would change his life forever.
16-year-old Rama Bhandari, a student of class 7 from Jajarkot, came from a very poor family. She injured her spine when she fell from the tree while cutting fodder for her cattle. Immediately after the accident, she was taken to the district hospital, from where she was referred to Nepal Orthopedic hospital, at Kathmandu. After surgery, she was sent to SIRC for comprehensive rehabilitation
31-year-old Binod Rai lives with his father, mother, daughter and wife in the Capital city of Nepal. A businessman of a fancy cloth shop, Rai was living a quality life with ease. On a fine sunny afternoon of 1st April 2013, Rai headed up to the roof of his house to check the water level in the water tank where he confronted a fatal accident.
15-year-old Laxman Rana Magar, an eighth grader from Dhading comes from a family with limited means. He injured his spine while he was cutting fodder for his cattle. Immediately after the accident, he was taken to nearby health post from where he was referred to HRDC (Hospital and Rehabilitation for Disable Children) Banepa. After receiving surgical treatment and 60 days of stay, he was referred to SIRC for comprehensive rehabilitation. He stayed at SIRC for 65 days where his father accompanied him and received training to assist Laxman.
